Eulogy
Arch was born in Hawick in the Scottish Borders. He had two elder brothers although one (William) died in infancy leaving John (Jock) and his three sisters - Betty, Nell and Jean. The family moved south to Eccles, Manchester in 1927 and he met and married Lucy Stronach, daughter of Arthur Stronach, in 1933. Arthur Stronach ran a Printing and Stationery business in Eccles, with his two maiden sisters, Elizabeth and Christina. Arthur Stronach died soon after Arch & Lucy were married and the business was left for them to run. WW2 came along and Arch needed to remain in Eccles to help Lucy run the business. He decided to work for a friend in a 'Reserved Trade' which ensured he was not called up. Tyre fitting to military and heavy goods vehicles at Tyre Repair Co during the day and helping Lucy in the evenings and weekends, he remained in Eccles. Their son, Ian, was born in 1936 so Lucy had even less time to run the business but they survived until Ian had finished his education and done his National Service in the Royal Navy. Lucy and Arch spent most of their married life living at Aldersyde, Ellesmere Road, Eccles - a home they really loved. Eventually they moved to a smaller home just down the road in Firwood, also on Ellesmere Road. They enjoyed life here too. Arch started to suffer from ill health - bronchitis and asthmatics, until his death in Hope Hospital in 1990. He was a true gentleman and very popular with friends and business people alike.
